The Department of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) on Sunday fined the country’s leading mobile phone operator Grameenphone Tk 2.5 lakh for deceiving subscribers while offering a special internet package in 2015. Shaheen Ara Momtaz, a deputy director of the DNCRP, imposed the penalty after conducting a hearing on the allegation of false advertisement and breeching promise by the operator which was filed by a subscriber. Shibli Sadiq, a subscriber of Grameemphone, filed the written complaint against the operator on October 13, 2015. In its complaint, Shibli Sadiq mentioned that he bought an internet package titled ‘Darun Eid Offer’. In the offer the operator promised that a subscriber would get 2GB free internet if he bought 1GB at a cost of Tk 275 including VAT with validity for 28 days. GP deducted Tk 325.74 and he got a SMS which said that the validity for the free 2GB internet was only valid for seven days and the subscribers would have to enjoy the offer between 2:00am and 12:00pm, the complaint added. The complaint also mentioned that there were no such conditions in the advertisement of the package. Following the complaint DNCRP fined GP for deceiving clients through false advertisement under the article 44 and 45 of the Consumers’ Right Protection Act-2009. The operator was penalised Tk 2 lakh for false advertisement to attract clients and Tk 50,000 for not providing promised services. Shaheen Ara Momtaz told the media that GP sought five working days to pay the penalty. She said if consumers have proper knowledge regarding consumer rights protection, it would be easy for him or her to file a complaint.
