‘ICNA Educational Meeting’ on Child Neurology and Development held in Cox’s Bazar

The two-day long international ‘ICNA Educational Meeting’ on Child Neurology and Development held from 5-6 November 2016 at a local hotel in Cox’s Bazar. The meeting is organized jointly by the Institute of Paediatric Neurodisorder and Autism (IPNA) in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University and International Child Neurology Association (ICNA). The meeting was focusing the exchange of knowledge, updated scientific presentations and discussions on best practice in child neurology and development.

Mr. Mohammad Nasim, MP, the honourable minister, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh was present and spoke in the inauguration held at 6.00pm on 4 Novemver as chief guest while Mr. Shaimum Sarwar Kamal, MP, Cox’s Bazar-3 constituency in Jatio Sangsad, Mr. Md. Sirajul Islam, secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and Mr. Mohammod Shahidullah, President, Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council were present and spoke as special guests. The inauguration was presided over by Prof. Dr. Kamrul Hasan Khan, Vice-Chancellor, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University. Prof. Dr. Shaheen Akhter, Project Director, IPNA delivered the opening speech.

Mentioning the heartiest determination of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the tireless effort of Saima Wajed Hossain, the daughter of Prime Minister to create mass awareness on autism and other neurological disorders in Bangladesh and South Asia, Mr. Mohammad Nasim said, the children suffer from neurological disorders are not the burden of the society. He said, “Many of the famous scholars were born with autism and other developmental disorders. I believe that many of our children can take them to that level if they are nurtured with proper nursing, social compassion and government patronization”.

He also said, “Our government is paying special attention to increase awareness about neurodevelopmental diseases including autism as well as taking initiatives to provide more trained professionals to diagnose and effective early intervention in collaboration with the experts of other countries”.

In his speech Mr. Sirajul Islam said that in recent years, Bangladesh has achieved numerous successes in various sectors. But the success in health sector ranked the top most among all the countries in this sub-continent. He also said that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has a firm commitment to cooperate with IPNA and other organizations to advance the neurological disorders including autism related awareness, early detection, treatment and research.

Chair Mr. Kamrul Hasan Khan expressed his commitment to serve the children suffer from autism and other neurological disorders all the time to come with best services for them and their families.

Among others Mr. Shaimum Sarwar Komol MP, Mr. Mohammod Shahidullah, ICNA Representative Prof. Dr. Pratibha Singhi were also spoke at the occasion.  11 speakers from USA, Australia, Belgium, India, Turkey and Bangladesh delivered their presentations and more than 200 participants including doctors and other professionals were participating in the Educational meeting. It is mentioning that this jointly organized event is being held in Bangladesh for the first time.
