Commuters in Chittagong city experience acute sufferings for gridlock every day, especially during the current month of Ramzan, as under-construction flyovers have shrunk space for traffic.
Construction work of a flyover from Muradpur to Lalkhan Bazar is going on.
Work on the 1.1 kilometer Kadamtoil flyover started in July, 2010 and while work on the 5.2 km Muradpur Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury flyover started six months ago.
Delay in construction works of the flyovers add to sufferings of the public with no sign of immediate completion of the works.
The city residents put blame on the Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) for failing to carry out construction works of the flyovers in time.
The size of the roads along the projects site has turned narrower due to the construction work forcing the vehicles to move slowly.
Traffic police sources said that traffic congestion witnesses an increase in every month of Ramzan.
The CDA has been saying for a year that within one or two months they will open Kadamtali flyover for the commuters.
However, the work on the flyover has not yet been completed in over five years.
On August 12, 2014, Ahmed Moinuddin, project director of Kadamtali flyover, told The Independent that by September, 2014 they would have completed the construction of the flyover.
When he was asked again on Monday why they could not complete the project work after eight months, he again expressed his hope that by July or August they will complete the construction work of the Kadamtali flyover.
“It has been not less than five years since the CDA started constructing flyover here (BRTC to Kadamtali). But the construction of the flyover is to be completed,” said Harun-or-Rashid, official of a private bank.
“Slow vehicular movement due to dilapidated roads and narrow roads in flyover construction areas causes severe traffic sandals,” he added.
During a recent visit, it was found that a long tailback is usually created everyday, which aggravates the traffic situation on the entire road up to Chittagong Railway Station, New Market and BRTC which stretches on the entire deck of the 1.1km flyover.
It was found that many fruits sellers have already occupied the rest of portion of the road adjacent to the construction site of the flyover.
The construction of Muradpur to Lalkhan Bazar ‘Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury’ flyover started six months ago.
Construction of the flyover is scheduled to be completed in June, 2016.
However, only five percent of the project has been completed in the past six months.
Due to the flyover construction in Muradpur area, huge traffic congestion is created everyday at Baghaddarhat, Muradpur and Gate no.2.
The condition has become worse due to heavy rains in the last two days.
“It is a nightmare now to travel through Muradpur area due to construction work of the flyover. The authorities without building alternative streets started constructing the flyover, so the vehicles cannot move,” said Tapash Chandra Paul, a resident of oxygen area.
When contacted, Masudul Hasan, deputy commissioner (Traffic) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police told The Independent “We asked the CDA to repair the dilapidated roads of the two sides of the ongoing flyovers.”
“They also assured us that they will repair the roads within the shortest possible time. Due to the month of Ramzan the traffic snarls has increased to a noticeable extent,” added Hasan.
