Khulna: A court here yesterday sent two councilors of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) to jail in two cases for attacking police and vandalising vehicles, reports UNB.
Those who landed in jail are KM Humayan Kabir, councillor of ward no 27, and Wahidur Rahman Dipu, councillor of ward 28 of the KCC. Metropolitan Sessions Judge Anup Kumar Goshwami passed the order after they surrendered before the court seeking bail.
Sources at the court said police filed two cases against 45 named people, including KCC mayor Mohammad Moniruzzaman Moni and the two councillors -- Kabir and Dipu -- and 250 unknown persons on charges of attacking police during the rally of BNP near the Power House crossing in the city on 26 November 2013.
On 30 April 2015, the investigation officer of the case pressed a charge sheet against 52 accused. A court issued a warrant of arrest against 16 fugitives, including Moni and the two councillors, on 22 November, 2015. On March 16, this year, Khulna Chief Metropolitan Magistrate MLB Mesbah Uddin asked the seizure of movable property of Moni and six others, including two councillors. Following the seizure order, on March 23, the suspended mayor Moni surrendered before a court seeking bail but the court sent Moni to jail.
