Liton Das, a rookie, waiting for his opportunity, is ready to bat in any position for the sake of making debut against a high ranked team like India. By default an opener who stormed into the discussion on the back of huge runs in the domestic circuit was drafted into the squad during the home series against Pakistan but failed to make a room in the playing XI.
As the wicket-keeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim, still looks doubtful to keep wicket following his finger injury, the possibility of Liton, also a gloveman, to make a debut gets brighter. However with Imrul Kayes making him a settled opener partner to Tamim Iqbal in the Test cricket, Liton would have to bat down the order if he makes debut.
“I’ve been playing as an opener for the last two or three years but I played as No 5, 6, 7 or sometimes at 3 at the beginning of my career. So it won’t be new for me to bat down the order if I could make my debut,” Liton told the reporters yesterday at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium after Bangladesh’s practice session.
Meanwhile when Liton is expecting to make his debut which eluded him during the series against Pakistan, Mushfiqur Rahim, also the Test captain started practicing wicket-keeping.
Mushfiqur Rahim’s ability to keep wicket will be crucial in deciding Liton’s fate but chief selector Faruque Ahmed had already termed Liton as the bright prospect, saying, the batsmen kept his place in the side by his own mettle.
“I’ll deem myself lucky if I could play against India in this series. As a player my target is to play for the team at any position,” Liton said adding, “I am ready to give my hundred percent efforts for the team to make it memorable.”
“If someone wants to build a long innings, he needs to play both spin and pace well. So it’s not problem whether I have to deal with spin first if I bat down the order.”
Liton revealed that he would give top priority to the team’s need rather setting the individual target. “I have no specific target. I will try to give what is needed for the team.”
Despite his chance of making debut looks highly likely, Liton said the team management is yet to give him any indication about his debut.
“I am yet to get any indication from the team management. I am just practicing,” said Liton who saw wicket-keeping and fielding as an identical thing.
Citing Test cricket as an acid test for him, Liton said that he seeks to prove his worth for the longer version.
“Actually Test is the main game of cricket. Every player has a target and dream to play it. I will be lucky if I can play it,” the Test-expectant said.
Dinajpur-born lad emerged through age-level cricket and hogged the limelight by his sparkling performance in the domestic competitions especially Premier League and National Cricket League, where he was the top-scorer in the last season.
“I have spent a good time during the last year Premier League and National Cricket League.
Terming Mark Boucher and Michael Clarke as his idol, Liton said, “Actually I don’t follow any player in the country. Outside the country, I used to follow one, Mark Boucher former wicketkeeper of South Africa, who retired from the game. Now I follow Michael Clarke.”
