While the Rajshahi and Khulna Divisions were scorching under a mild to moderate heatwave, the much-sought-after southwest monsoon arrived in Sylhet from the Chittagong Division yesterday.
Sylhet recorded 16mm of rain yesterday, which brought down the temperature to 34.3 degrees Celsius. It may take at least two to three days for the monsoon system to usher in the rainy season.
Southwestern Jessore had the worst time yesterday under 39.4 degrees Celsius, the highest maximum temperature recorded in the country, followed by Chuadanga (38.7 degrees Celsius) and Rajshahi (38.2 degrees Celsius). Khulna recorded a temperature of 37 degrees Celsius and Dhaka 35.6 degrees Celsius.
When asked why it is taking so long for the monsoon to spread all over the country, a meteorologist said a depression in the Arabian Sea had taken the winds out of the monsoon in the north Bay of Bengal for which it cannot move faster to bring in the desired rain.
Slowly, the monsoon would spread to central parts of Bangladesh in the next two to three days and then across the country, the Met office said. Meanwhile, mild to moderate heatwave would continue to rage over Rajshahi and Khulna Divisions, besides Tangail, Faridpur and Dinajpur, it added.
