CHITTAGONG: The historic six-point day was observed here yesterday with a renewed call for completing the trial of the rest of the war criminals and Bangabandhu's unfinished tasks to materialise his dreams, reports BSS. The father of the nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujbur Rahman, on this day in 1966 announced the six-point demand at city's Laldighi Maidan with the objective of the earning independence that later triggered strong commotion in the whole Pakistan and subsequently Bangabandhu and his party fell prey to the oppression and torture of Pakistani military ruler. Awami League (AL), its associate organisations, different socio- cultural and professional bodies observed the day through daylong programmes. The programmes included placing wreaths at the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, discussions, bringing out processions and playing of the recorded historic speeches of Bangabandhu.
To mark the day, Chittagong city AL arranged a grand rally at Saheed Minar yesterday afternoon. Chittagong city AL president and former city mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury presided over the meeting while vice-chancellor of Premier University and advisory council member of AL, Dr Anupom Sen, city AL general secretary and newly-elected mayor AZM Nasir Uddin and AL leader Advocate Iftakher Saimul Chowdhury, among others, addressed it.
The speakers said the six-point demand, declared by Bangabandhu, was a Magna Carta in the history that aimed at liberating Bengali people from all sorts of oppression, injustice and exploitation perpetrated by Pakistan. The speakers also paid rich tributes to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who spearheaded the movement and sacrificed his life for establishing rights of the people.
Speaking on the occasion, ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury said the Chittagong city unit AL is united for accomplishing the trial of the war criminals. He said AL would foil all conspiracies of the vested quarter and assist the government to build a prosperous country free from poverty, hunger, unemployment and corruption. He also thanked the present government for declaring a mass-people welfare oriented budget for next fiscal year. Leaders and workers of AL Chittagong south and north district units and its different front organisations also observed the historic day in a befitting manner in their respective party offices. Terming the six-point demand as the charter of Bangalees' emancipation and the 'Magna Carta', Awami League leaders in the discussion meeting said history bore testimony to the fact that Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had rightly announced the six-point demand that suited the demand of the time. They said many politicians were of the opinions that Bangabandhu would not be able to retain his political entity following his announcement of the six-point demand but the reality was that Sheikh Mujib emerged as Bangabandhu, father of the nation and the greatest Bangalee of all time for the six-point demand concept. Local dailies published some special articles highlighting the life and contributions of the great leader of the country's Independence who spearheaded the six-points demand.
