107 drums of ‘cocaine’ seized in Ctg

SHAMSUDDIN ILLIUS, Ctg

A container suspected to be holding 107 drums filled with liquid cocaine has been sealed off at the Chittagong port by the authorities concerned.
A highly placed police source said that the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) requested the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) to seal off the container after getting information and instructions from the INTERPOL. The container is likely to be opened today at 11 am in presence of senior officials of police, department of narcotics control, intelligence branch, customs Intelligence and Chittagong Port Authority.
The container, at CCT Yard-3 of the Chittagong port, was sealed off by Hossain Ahmed, additional director, customs intelligence on Saturday evening in presence of members of police, customs intelligence and investigation department officials. The container holding 107 drums full of approximately 2,140 kg of liquid is suspected to be contraband drug cocaine worth over Tk 100 crore.

The container (CDHU-9145769/193844) was imported by a company named Khan Jahan Ali Limited of Nabi Market, 232 Khatunganj, Chittagong, declaring the item to be specialised edible oil from Bolivia.
When contacted, Banaj Kumar Majumder, additional police commissioner (Crime & Operation) of CMP told The Independent, “The container was imported from Bolivia declaring the item to be edible oil. But actually they imported cocaine. Getting information, we requested the CPA to seal off the container. After opening the container on Monday the whole thing will become clear.”
On Saturday evening, the Detective Branch (DB) of Police raided the office of importer Khan Jahan Ali limited in Khatunganj of Chittagong and arrested its owner Nur Mohammad. Owner Nur Mohammad, during initial interrogation, claimed that an employee of the firm named Sohel imported the cocaine using the address and letterhead of the company, said a DB police source. Police have also detained Sohel.
Security has been beefed up at the Chittagong port following the incident, said sources.
