State minister for foreign affairs Shahriar Alam yesterday vented his ire on Grameenphone, the leading telecom company of Bangladesh, on his facebook page, over the poor quality of service.
On his Facebook page the minister wrote: “What is the problem with GP (Grameenphone)? Impossible to make calls. Call drops. Couple of months ago they used to send apology sms after call drop. No trace of that even; also very poor network at Arani. I hardly get signal from my bedroom on the 1st floor and there is no building close to my residence to weaken the signal.
I requested them two years ago to look into it, but no improvement.”
Commenting on Alam’s facebook remark, state minister for post and telecommunication Tarana Halim said: “I have been repeatedly asking them (GP) to improve their service quality, including the call drop problem. I have also asked Telenor. It seems they are more interested in making money than providing quality service. They are our valued development partners; it is time they start acting like one.”
Talat Kamal, a senior official of the Grameenphone, told reporters that they are aware of the minister’s complaint.
When asked about the minister’s complaint made two years ago, Kamal said the company will take immediate action. He added that they would communicate with Alam today and that GP officials were asked to resolve the problem without delay.
When asked about the grievances of general subscribers, Kamal said, “Everyone is important to us and we take note of all our subscribers.”
He also said the GP has been investing continuously to improve the quality of its network.
GP is a joint venture between Telenor (55.8%), the largest telecommunications service provider in Norway having mobile phone operations in 12 other countries, and Grameen Telecom Corporation (34.2%), a non-profit organisation of Bangladesh. The other 10 per cent shares belong to retail and institutional investors.
