The Teesta has started flowing above its danger level yesterday, following heavy rains during the past 24 hours in and around the Dalia point of its barrage in Nilphamari. The river was measured as flowing over 20cm above the danger level after rising by 50cm following 212mm rains overnight till 6am, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said. Heavy rains were also recorded in Rangpur, which recorded 119mm. Meanwhile, the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and the Surma have registered a rising trend that may continue respectively in the next 48 and 24 hours, the FFWC said. The Ganges-Padma systems, however, are showing a falling trend, which is likely to continue.
Meanwhile, sources in the meteorological department said the rains which continued yesterday across the country would start subsiding from today. But rains would return on Thursday in Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions. These areas may also see showers on Friday, the met sources said. There could be some light rainfall over the capital on Friday, the sources added.
Meanwhile, the maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to lower signal as squally weather is unlikely over North Bay and adjoining coastal area of Bangladesh, a Met Office warning message said.
