The rawhide traders in Chittagong fear that they might have to incur losses due to the influx of the seasonal businessmen.
The rawhide traders think that every year many seasonal businessmen are gravitated to the sector with the hope of making some quick bucks.
The traders further said that the influx of seasonal businessmen having no proper idea about preserving process of rawhides and market prices create instability in the market.
The commercial capital Chittagong has long been playing an important role in supplying rawhide to the tannery industry in the country. Rawhide worth about Tk 40 crore is traded during every Eid-ul-Azha.
It may be mentioned that a total of 112 rawhide warehouses – small and medium – are located on a 4-km stretch between Muradpur and Oxygen area in Chittagong.
Every year the rawhides are collected through middlemen locally known as third-party, from Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and three hilly districts. The collected rawhides are later supplied to the tannery owners.
“We had collected around 4.80 lakh rawhides during last Eid-ul-Azha. This year we are also hopeful of procuring the same quantity of rawhides. However, we are deeply concerned with the influx of the seasonal rawhide traders,” added Sekander.
While talking to The Independent, Md Sekander Mia, president of Chittagong Rawhide Traders Association, said that the seasonal businessmen have no clear idea of buying rawhides.
“The seasonal procurers buy rawhides at an exorbitant price depending on a rough guess. The seasonal traders do not have any idea about the quality of rawhides. We have to face difficulty selling rawhides to the tanners as the seasonal traders defy the minimum price structure set by Bangladesh Tanners Association,” said Sekander.
“The rawhides should be salted within 5-6 hours of slaughtering animals. Otherwise the quality of the collected rawhides begins to get damaged. This year the preservation and processing of collected hides may get damaged as production of the two tanneries located in Chittagong are suspended. In most cases, the seasonal procurers do not care for salting the rawhides and eventually we have to bargain over the price with the tanners,” said Moslem Uddin, former president of Chittagong Rawhide Traders Association.
Moslem claimed that the entry of the seasonal traders into the rawhide market could easily be restricted if the government, banks and financial institutions provide them with soft loans.
According to the data provided by the District Livestock Office, a total of 4, 86,839 cattleheads were sacrificed in Chittagong in the last Eid-ul-Azha.
This included 3,63,887 cows, 1,10,567 goats and 12,385 buffaloes.
