Jatiya Party candidate Prof Dr Akkas Ali was unofficially declared elected in the by-polls to Kurigram-3 constituency. Akkas bagged 82,598 votes to beat his nearest rival Awami League contestant Prof MA Matin who polled 79,895 votes, said returning officer GM Sahatab Uddin.
Through this win, Jatiya Party was able to retain their supremacy in the constituency as it also had the last lawmaker from this seat. Awami League has not won the seat since 1991. The BNP, on the other hand, did not contest the by-polls.
Voting in the by-election was held from 8am to 4pm without any break and there was no report of any untoward incident in the constituency. There are 3,66,811 voters in the constituency and the casting of ballots took place at 159 centres in Ulipur and Chilmari upazilas. Although the constituency’s boundary has been demarcated, the election was held with the electoral boundary fixed by the Election Commission (EC) in the 10th national polls.
The seat fell vacant after the death of Jatiya Party MP AKM Mayeedul Islam. The EC announced the schedule on June 10.
