Farmers happy over bumper muskmelon yield

Farmers happy over bumper muskmelon yield

Growers of muskmelon, locally called ‘bangi’ or ‘fut’, have achieved a bumper production and are getting a fair price this year.

As the climate is favourable and there was no serious viral attack, a good harvest of the fruit has brought cheers to growers in the district.

Muskmelon is mainly grown in the district’s Nazirpur and Indurkani upazilas.

Farmers of Matibhanga village in Nazirpur upazila are happy with the good production and price of muskmelon. After the harvesting of Aman paddy, farmers sow bangi seeds in their fields and it takes around two and a half months to get the yield.

Azizul Sheikh, a farmer of the same village, said they did not face any trouble in growing the fruit and were happy to get the expected production.

“Within one and a half months, we will be able to sell all the fruits from the fields,” said another farmer, Abul Bashar.

This year, farmers have been selling bangi at a handsome price of Tk. 3,000 for 100 pieces. Besides, they have faced no problem in selling the crop.

Bhuban Boyddho, a local farmer, said that wholesale buyers from different parts of the country, including Dhaka, bought the fruits directly from them and transported them by trucks. A few locals were also involved in the profitable business, he added.

An investment of around Tk. 30,000 is needed to grow the fruit on 63 decimals (one bigha) of land. It helps farmers to get a profit of Tk. 50,000.  Some farmers said they had to expend a good sum of money and labour in watering the plants. “We carried water over a long distance,” said Tamal, a local farmer, who demanded iirrigation facilities from the government to make banga cultivation easier for an increasing number of cultivators.

The farmers, however, alleged that the quality of fertilisers was low. They had to apply excessive fertilisers and hence spend extra money, they said.

Nazirpur upazila agriculture extension department (AED) sources said that  bangi fruit was cultivated on about 100 acres in the upazila this year. Digbijoy Hazra, upazila agriculture officer of Nazirpur, said that to resolve the problem of irrigation, the AED was trying to create an irrigation line at Matibhanga village.
