An alleged rapist of a minor girl has accused the victim’s father and his associates of trying to extort money from him. Shah Alam, who came out of jail on bail on July 5, lodged the extortion case against Kabir Ahmed and seven other residents of Shilok Minagazir Tila in Rangunia police station area of Chittagong. The case, which was lodged in the senior judicial magistrate court of Chittagong on July 28, also mentioned 10 to 12 unnamed persons.
In his complaint, Alam said Kabir and the other accused had barged into his home with arms around 10.30 pm on July 25 and demanded Tk. 20 lakh from him. The court ordered the officer-in-charge of Rangunia Police Station, Humayun Kabir, to treat the case as an FIR if primary evidence was found against the accused. Humayun Kabir told The Independent, “We have received the court order and started an investigation.” He, however, refused to confirm if police had found any evidence so far. “The case is being investigated by sub-inspector Anwar Ullah,” he said. The SI on his part said: “I am yet to receive the case.” Meanwhile, the girl’s father claimed that the extortion case against him was fabricated. “Alam is an influential person and threatened to kill us after we lodged a police complaint against him for raping my daughter in May. We fled our village in fear. Since then, I and my family have been hiding in Chittagong city,” he told The Independent. Despite repeated attempts, Alam could not be reached on his mobile phone for his comments.
According to the case history, the girl’s mother had lodged a complaint with Rangunia police on May 8 that her neighbour, Alam, raped her minor daughter and made her pregnant.
Based on the allegation, police arrested Alam but later released him. Police then arrested the victim’s teenage brother and accused him of raping his sister. The boy has been languishing in jail since then.
Following a report on The Independent titled “Cops ‘label’ teenage boy as sister’s violator” on May 23, the High Court ordered police to lodge an FIR based on the report and arrest Alam. The court order came on May 25
and Alam was arrested for the second time on May 27.
On May 31, SM Badiuzzaman, DB police inspector, submitted a status report on the investigation to the court of the senior judicial magistrate. The report said, “The accused (Alam) and the plaintiff (the girl’s mother) are residents of the same locality. The accused is an influential person. The plaintiff and the victim are helpless and poor. As they have fled the locality in fear, we could not question them.”
The report also recommended against granting bail to Alam: “The accused is an influential person and he can hamper the investigation and recording of depositions if he were to be given bail before completion of the probe.”
Alam, however, walked out of jail on July 5 after a High Court bench of Justices Quamrul Islam Siddiqui and Gobinda Chandra Tagore granted him interim bail for six months.
