Leaders and activists of the Awami League’s Bagmara upazila unit have alleged that the local lawmaker, Engineer Enamul Haque, was fuelling intra-party feud and patronising members of banned militant outfits and outlawed Communist groups.
However, Enamul Haque, member of Parliament from the Rajshahi-4 constituency, has refuted the allegations.
At a press conference in Rajshahi city, organised recently by leaders and activists of the AL’s Bagmara upazila unit and its wings, Abdus Sobhan, former president of the unit, made the allegation.
Jakirul Islam Santu, upazila chairman and secretary of the AL’s Bagmara upazila unit, Abul Kalam Azad, Mayor and secretary of the Taherpur Municipality Awami League, senior leader Birendra Nath Sarker, Mokbul Hossain Mirdha, chairman of Sreepur union, Mostafa Kamal, chairman of Jogipara union, Alamgir Sarker, chairman of Goalkandi union of the upazila, Mahabub Rahman, joint secretary of the AL’s Bagmara upazila unit, Ziauddin Tipu, organizing secretary, senior leader Masor Ali, Abdus Salam and others were present.
In a written statement at the press conference, Abdus Sobhan alleged that many identified terrorist or militant outfits and banned Communist groups had unleashed terror in the upazila under the patronisation of Enamul Haque. As a result, local Awami League leaders and common people are not feeling safe, he said.
“Lawmaker Enamul Haque supported his chosen candidates against the party nominated candidates in the last upazila parishad election. In clashes among different groups in the recent past, at least two persons have been killed”, Abdus Sobhan alleged.
He further alleged that Awami League leaders are being forced to follow the lawmaker, or be harassed with false cases. He demanded removal of the officer-in-charge of Bagmara police station to save the party leaders from the wrath of the lawmaker.
“We had attempted to file cases against the MP, but the police refused to record those”, Sobhan alleged.
They had also sent complaints to the central leaders of the Awami League, Sobhan told the press conference.
When contacted, Enamul Haque said the allegations are baseless. “They have raised these with an ulterior motive to tarnish my image before the next national election. However; they will not succeed,” he added.
“No terrorist activity has taken place in Bagmara in the last several years. All terrorists have been brought to book during my time. At present, Bagmara is a peaceful place,” Enamul said.
He added that he had drawn the attention of leaders at the highest level of the party to the matter.
